The fan motif (senmen)—with its gracefully expanding shape—has long been cherished in Japanese culture as a symbol of auspiciousness, signifying the idea of “spreading fortune.” Within each fan, delicate renderings of seasonal flora and landscapes evoke the natural beauty and poetic sensibility of the changing seasons.
This exquisite jubako further incorporates motifs of flowing water and grasses and flowers, brought to life through the traditional maki-e technique, in which gold powder is meticulously applied onto lacquer. The flowing water symbolizes continuous prosperity and the passage of time, while the plants represent vitality, renewal, and the abundance of nature.
The five-tiered form is considered especially formal and auspicious in Japanese celebratory traditions. Each tier metaphorically adds a layer of joy, harmony, and well-being, making the box not only functional but richly symbolic.
This piece embodies the refined aesthetics of Japanese lacquerware—uniting nature, craftsmanship, and meaning in an object that celebrates both artistry and life.
