The five-tier jubako is among the most formal types of traditional tiered boxes used in Japanese celebratory occasions, with each layer symbolizing a deepening of fortune and joy. The design featuring pine and crane—both revered motifs in classical Japanese culture—represents enduring longevity and auspiciousness.
The pine tree, evergreen throughout the seasons, symbolizes steadfastness and immortality, while the crane, with its graceful form and long life, is celebrated as a symbol of peace and prosperity. These motifs are rendered using the traditional maki-e technique, in which gold or silver powder is delicately sprinkled onto lacquer to create intricate and radiant designs.
This five-tier jubako is more than a decorative container—it is a refined expression of craftsmanship and cultural symbolism, offering visual beauty and heartfelt wishes for lasting happiness and well-being.
