This elegant jubako is adorned in the Kaga lacquer tradition, which flourished in the city of Kanazawa during the Edo period under the patronage of the Maeda clan. Unlike the robust build of Wajima lacquerware, Kaga-nuri favors refined grace, subtle hues, and painterly surface decoration.
The surface features Kaga maki-e, a distinguished style of sprinkled gold and silver lacquer painting known for its delicate realism and restrained elegance. Blossoming under the cultural influences of the tea ceremony and samurai aesthetics, Kaga maki-e evokes a quiet dignity—each line deliberate, each shimmer composed.
Here, the design is a classic Takarazukushi motif—a “treasure trove” of auspicious symbols including the magic mallet, sacred scrolls, money bags, and the wish-fulfilling jewel. Each element is an emblem of prosperity, longevity, wisdom, and joy.
Once used to present celebratory dishes during weddings or the New Year, this jubako is more than a vessel. It is a ceremonial object—an expression of hope and harmony, imbued with artistic legacy and the auspicious spirit of Japanese tradition.
