Origin: Japan
Size: 15 x 15 x 20 cm
Material: Urushi lacquer on natural wood base (Sanuki-suri)
This finely crafted jubako originates from Sanuki, in present-day Kagawa Prefecture—an area with a quietly enduring lacquerware tradition dating back to the early Edo period.
Sanuki lacquerware is known for its subtle warmth and honest craftsmanship. Unlike more ornate regional styles, its beauty lies in its practicality and restraint, enhanced by traditional techniques such as nunokise—a method of reinforcing the wooden base with cloth before applying layers of urushi lacquer.
This jubako, reflects the ideals of seasonal celebration and familial connection. Often used during New Year gatherings and ceremonial occasions, it is a vessel not only for food, but for memory and meaning—representing prosperity, harmony, and continuity across generations.
In its simple yet deliberate form, this piece embodies a quiet elegance: the union of material skill and cultural sensibility, deeply rooted in the everyday rituals of Japanese life.
