This opulent jubako is a creation of Takaoka lacquerware, a tradition that blossomed in the early 17th century in Toyama Prefecture under the patronage of the Maeda lords of Kaga. Fusing the refined aesthetics of Kyoto with the craftsmanship of the Hokuriku region, Takaoka lacquerware came to embody a uniquely elegant form of ceremonial artistry.

Its surface is adorned with takamaki-e—a technique in which motifs are built up in raised relief using multiple layers of lacquer and pure gold powder, resulting in images that are not only seen, but felt. When executed with honkin (pure gold), the decoration achieves a depth and radiance that elevate the piece from object to offering.

Historically, such boxes were presented at weddings or seasonal festivities, filled with delicacies but laden with meaning: the celebration of legacy, prosperity, and the rhythms of the year. Within the glowing layers of urushi and gold lies a quiet opulence—a balance between ceremony and craft, dignity and grace.

Today, this jubako stands as a testament to generations of artisans who transformed humble materials into vessels of reverence, memory, and enduring beauty.

 • This is a delicate work of art made from natural wood and finished with multiple layers of hand-applied lacquer. Please avoid strong impact, pressure, or dropping, as this may cause cracking or surface damage.

 • Keep out of direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and damp or dry environments. Store in a well-ventilated, shaded area.

 • After use, gently wipe with a soft, damp cloth and immediately follow with a dry cloth.

 • Not suitable for microwave ovens, dishwashers, or dryers.
