The fan motif—known as senmen in Japanese—has long been cherished as a symbol of good fortune, elegance, and cultural refinement. The folding fan, which opens outward in a gentle curve, is associated with the idea of expansion and prosperity, making it a favored motif in celebratory arts.
In traditional lacquerware, especially in maki-e (sprinkled gold lacquer), fan shapes are often adorned with seasonal flowers, auspicious patterns, or poetic fragments, transforming each fan into a miniature canvas of nature and literature. These layered vignettes evoke a refined sensibility, echoing the Japanese aesthetic of yūgen—a subtle, profound beauty.
On a Wajima lacquer jubako, the fan motif is not merely decorative; it becomes a vessel of cultural memory and graceful intention. The fan’s delicate curves, rendered in gold against a jet-black lacquer ground, celebrate life’s transitions with dignity and joy. Such jubako were traditionally used during weddings, New Year feasts, and other formal occasions, carrying with them both physical nourishment and the spirit of celebration.
