PRODUCT DETAILS

Origin: Japan

Size: 21 x 20 x 14 cm (Three tires)

Material: Urushi lacquer on natural wood base (Wajima-nuri)

This three-tiered jubako is crafted in the Wajima-nuri tradition—one of Japan’s most revered lacquerware techniques, born in the coastal city of Wajima on the Noto Peninsula. With origins tracing back to the 16th century, Wajima lacquerware is distinguished by its exceptional durability, achieved through a unique foundation made of diatomaceous earth and multiple layers of hand-applied urushi lacquer.

The three-tiered jubako is a ceremonial stacking box traditionally used to serve celebratory dishes during New Year gatherings, weddings, and other auspicious occasions. In Wajima lacquer, such boxes transcend utility, becoming heirlooms passed from generation to generation—symbols of family, festivity, and craftsmanship.

Often adorned with auspicious motifs rendered in maki-e or chinkin, the boxes reflect the aesthetic depth and spiritual elegance of Japanese culture. With its deep, mirror-like finish and timeless form, the Wajima three-tiered jubako is not merely a vessel—it is a celebration of artistry, tradition, and the beauty of shared moments.
