This exquisite five-tiered jubako originates from Wajima, a region on the Noto Peninsula renowned for its centuries-old lacquer tradition. Painstakingly created through successive layers of urushi lacquer, this piece harmoniously unites one of Japan’s most refined decorative techniques chinkin (gold-inlay engraving)
Historically, such lacquered boxes were used to mark moments of joy—weddings, New Year feasts, and ceremonial occasions—imbuing everyday objects with spiritual and symbolic meaning. They served not just as vessels for food, but as heirlooms of hospitality, lineage, and seasonal reverence.
The butterfly motif delicately engraved in chinkin (gold inlay) carries deep symbolic meaning in Japanese tradition.
Across centuries, the butterfly has represented grace, transformation, and longevity. Its metamorphosis—from chrysalis to winged beauty—evokes the poetic idea of spiritual rebirth and the fleeting yet radiant nature of life. When depicted in pairs, butterflies are also seen as auspicious symbols of marital harmony and joyful union, making them especially cherished in bridal and celebratory contexts.
On this Wajima lacquer jubako, the butterfly dances across a deep, lustrous black surface—its quiet shimmer an emblem of elegance and the quiet strength of tradition passed down through generations.
In the modern age, this piece stands as both functional and sacred—an object where material mastery meets the quiet, ceremonial poetry of Japanese life.
