Size: 19.8 x 19.8 x 23.8 (Four tires)
Material: Urushi lacquer on natural wood base
This refined jubako comes from Wajima, a coastal city revered for producing some of Japan’s most enduring lacquerware. Meticulously handcrafted using Wajima’s signature base—built with layers of lacquer over diatomaceous earth—this piece embodies the region’s hallmark: strength beneath serenity.
What sets this jubako apart is its decoration in chinkin, or “sunken gold.” In this centuries-old technique, patterns are delicately incised into the lacquered surface with a fine blade, then inlaid with gold leaf or powder. Unlike the brilliance of maki-e, chinkin evokes a quieter radiance—one that shimmers from within the carved line, intimate and enduring.
Adorning this piece is the jubomatsu motif: pine needles (matsuba), long revered in Japanese culture as a symbol of longevity, resilience, and celebration, paired with the character for kotobuki (寿), meaning long life or felicity. The combination speaks of timeless wishes—for prosperity, for health, for continuity.
