Origin:Japan
Size: 26 x 26 x 53 cm (Five Tiers)
Material: Urushi lacquer on natural wood base (Wajima-nuri)
Note: Includes two lidsThis exquisite five-tiered jubako originates from Wajima, a region on
the Noto Peninsula renowned for its centuries-old lacquer tradition.
Painstakingly created through successive layers of urushi lacquer, this
piece harmoniously unites two of Japan’s most refined decorative
techniques: chinkin (gold-inlay engraving) and maki-e (sprinkled gold
and silver powder painting).
The design adorning the surface is known as the “Four Gentlemen”
(Shikunshi 四君子)—a classical East Asian motif symbolizing the
virtues of a noble character through the depiction of four seasonal
plants:
Plum blossom (resilience), orchid (elegance), bamboo (integrity), and
chrysanthemum (fortitude).
Each is rendered in fine detail, a poetic reference to nature’s cycles
and the moral ideals they represent in Confucian and Zen traditions.
The box is not merely functional but ceremonial—a vessel to hold
celebration, hospitality, and time itself. Whether presented on a festive
table or displayed as an objet d’art, it embodies an enduring aesthetic:
the convergence of material mastery and philosophical depth.
