Wajima lacquerware, crafted in the Noto Peninsula region, is renowned for its centuries-old tradition and exceptional craftsmanship. The chinkin technique, used here, involves engraving delicate lines into the lacquer surface and filling them with gold powder or leaf, creating intricate, dimensional patterns that captivate the eye.
This five-tier jubako features motifs of flowers and butterflies, symbolizing the beauty and transience of nature. In Japanese culture, butterflies represent transformation, growth, happiness, and the soul, while floral patterns evoke the changing seasons and the cycle of life.
Five-tier jubako are traditionally reserved for formal celebrations such as weddings and New Year festivities. The elegant combination of floral and butterfly motifs serves as a graceful emblem of blessings and joy, making this piece not only a functional container but a cherished work of art imbued with wishes for happiness and prosperity.
