This exquisite jubako hails from Wajima, a coastal town on the Noto Peninsula, long revered as the heartland of Japanese lacquerware. Rooted in centuries of tradition, Wajima lacquerware is celebrated for its remarkable durability and richly decorative artistry.
What sets Wajima apart is its foundation—literally. Beneath each glossy layer of urushi lies a base strengthened with layers of jinoko, a powder made from local diatomaceous earth, reinforcing the wood and allowing for unparalleled longevity. This structural integrity makes Wajima ware not only beautiful but enduring—crafted to outlast generations.
Adorning the surface of this jubako is maki-e, a centuries-old technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled over hand-drawn lacquer motifs, then sealed with layers of transparent urushi. The result is a luminous, painterly finish that captures both the passage of time and the brilliance of celebration.
Historically, such lacquered boxes were used to mark moments of joy—weddings, New Year feasts, and ceremonial occasions—imbuing everyday objects with spiritual and symbolic meaning. They served not just as vessels for food, but as heirlooms of hospitality, lineage, and seasonal reverence.
In the modern age, this piece stands as both functional and sacred—an object where material mastery meets the quiet, ceremonial poetry of Japanese life.
